~Worth Watching~
Delicious
—For her directorial debut, Funke Akindele did a good job; she succeeded in carrying us on an electoral journey.
We were able to see what happens behind campaigns such as the superficial religious affiliation, branding image, youth involvement, coalition between opposing parties, and so on
—Your Excellency’s production needs to be commended in terms of audio, score, set design, make-up, costume, lighting, color grading, cinematography, etc. The crew worked hard and it really paid off
—Chief Lekan (Akin Lewis) and his wife (Funke Akindele), being the lead actors, really took ownership of their roles which elevated the story. Their chemistry was so effortless, amusing and real; they were a joy to watch
—A big round of applause to the writer for including a number of different characters who magnified the plot (e.g. a fake clergyman, a wanna-be singer, social media personalities, Lekan’s ex-wife, etc).
The humorous ‘Ajadi’ dance revealed how easily people fall for silly mottos rather than vote for true change. Additionally, the ever-present social media animation & pop-ups demonstrated that trending on the net has become more important in today’s time compared to thinking and analyzing critically
—Powerful and thought-provoking dialogue
Bland
—The only element that unfortunately failed to take Your Excellency to a 5-star rating was the flat storyline. Overall, the movie just showed how presidential campaigns work; there was no visible climax or call to action
