Soooo, we read the plot of The Great Indian Kitchen (TGIK) and started yawning because we knew it was going to be another one of those plots on domestic abuse. But boredom led us to watch TGIK and it was the best decision ever! TGIK is truly one of a kind. Actually, there are no words in the English language to describe the superior work executed in this film. In all honesty, TGIK is one of those movies better experienced than told😃
We just want to note some particular elements that made TGIK phenomenal: (1) the deliberate absence of score for the main part of the movie in order to direct our focus on the storytelling, (2) the husband and wife didn’t have names, (3) the meticulous display of the repetitive domestic activities leading to suffocation, (4) the abundant use of symbols and irony to demonstrate the husband’s hypocrisy, the wife’s liberation, and customs’ subjugation.
Annddd what a superb cinematography and editing!!
TGIK is a masterpiece and will forever be remembered as a narrative that shook the status quo
