It’s the hype! It’s the hype that gives movies like Ponniyin Selvan so much attention due to their epic genre that immediately excites viewers.
In such movies, production will always be grand with dynamic fighting choreography; thus, we won’t even spend time talking about that aspect.
The stories always open the same way, there’s a deep narrator’s voice telling us about an ancient tale and the dominant themes revolve around treason, hunger for power, loyalty, and love. Nothing to look forward to that we haven’t already seen in other similar movies.
The main issue is the lack of o.r.i.g.i.n.a.l.i.t.y. Tons of epic films like Ponniyin Selvan have been made in the past, why not bring something more innovative in terms of the plot or characters? Rather than constantly focusing on royal families, why not have a narrative on the common people or the slaves during those times? They also have enriching perspectives to bring.
So sad that Ponniyin Selvan was just another one of “those movies”…😔
